Minimal Homeschool Spelling - No List, No Test

So doing a homeschool minimalist approach to spelling really means in my home that it is not about having an amazing curriculum that has 180 lessons for your child's specific grade.  It is about doing everyday things that reinforces spelling in a practical appplication.

Here let me tell you more:

Hey did you like that?  You should subscribe and share!

So again what does this look like?

Well this is using dication and copy work in our other resources and when they misspell a word, they write it 10 times.  Do we go back over the copywork to focus on those words, well you can, but in my home we move on.  Yep you heard that right, we just move on.  We will come across those words again and if it did not stick, we will just copy them down again correctly.

These are the dictation books that I am using.

I am using a collection of Free Domain Books by Kate Van Wagenen that around 1909. You can get the books in 2 sets, the first set is made up of 2 books that cover multiple grades or a second set that is a book for each grade.  This really comes down to personal discrission.

The Modern Speller Book 1 1922 covers dictation from Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4, well the grades are refered to as Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4.  Here is the link for this book.

The Modern Speller Book 1 1916 covers dictation from Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8, well the grades are refered to as Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8.  Here is the link for this book.

So how do you know where to place your child?

Well, honestly, unless your child is gifted, do not be in shock that your child is overwhelmed at grade level.  Seriously, back in the day grade equivalents were much higher than they are today.  Find a spot that you child can build confidence and work easily at first.  You want to introduce this new type of work at a level that builds confidence and joy of the task.  You do not want to turn this new resource into an activity of dread.  If you feel like you are behind, well, you need to just let that go.  You need to do what builds skill for your child, not keeping up with an imaginary Joneses's set of standards.  Notice how I did not actually say the Joneses, Because I doubt that they exsist.

  3. Thanks! This is reassuring. I have been doing something very similar just using the Bible and it works! My 6 and 7 year olds can spell words like “ comprehend” and “ acquainted” and know how to use them in context. We copy and dictate verses til they are spelled correctly. It takes care of writing, spelling, vocabulary and memory and grammar for their level. Thank you for sharing your experience, enjoyed your video

  4. If I remember correctly, years 7 and 8 are at the end of the 2nd volume. Because Vol. 1 is years 2, 3 and 4. Then Vol. 2 is years 5, 6, 7 and 8. :)
